Cycle Portugal

Summary

From the wine cellars of Porto to the whitewashed streets of Lisbon, this Portugal Coastal Cycle follows the Atlantic the length of the country on some of Europe's finest coastal cycling infrastructure. Across five riding days, you'll move through a landscape that shifts constantly — clifftop chapels and fishing beaches, vast pine forests planted for shipbuilding centuries ago, and lagoons alive with birdlife — before the ride winds down on the cliffs above Nazaré and the surf beaches of Peniche.

This is a journey built for enjoying the coast rather than conquering it. The riding is largely flat or gently rolling, following dedicated cycle paths, ecopistas, and quiet backroads with the sea rarely out of sight. Days range from a relaxed 30 km spin into Nazaré to a fuller 60 km push along the coast, with a short, sharp climb over the Serra da Boa Viagem the one real test of the legs.

Beyond the saddle, there's Porto's UNESCO-listed old town, the surf culture and dramatic cliffs of Peniche, and a final free afternoon riding trams through Lisbon's hilly streets. With flat coastal paths, pine forest trails, and some of Portugal's most photogenic small towns, this is a cycling adventure that suits a wide range of riders.

All of our challenges are accessible to most people. This moderate challenge has been scored 3 out of 5 when considering distance, elevation gain, max altitude, environment, and terrain.
