Jo Whitely lost her mum to cancer only two weeks after she recovered from breast cancer herself. Now Jo has signed up to Women V Cancer Ride the Night Edinburgh to help us put an end to the disease once and for all. Here, she tells her story.
I just wanted to say that I'm doing Ride the Night Edinburgh as I had breast cancer last year and I want to give something back to the charities.
I was diagnosed in March 2017 with stage three breast cancer in my left breast. I underwent six months of extensive chemotherapy and then I had a mastectomy and reconstruction a year ago. It was a really hard and tough year last year. I run a business and have two young children and so had to work and look after the kids during it all.
My mum had previously had breast cancer twenty-six years ago. A week before my diagnosis in March 2017, Mum was diagnosed with breast cancer again and had secondary's in her liver, bones and blood. Mum also underwent chemotherapy for some time but this stopped working and she died on 20 October 2017, two weeks after I found out I had the all clear.
After such a hard year, Jo has committed to take part in Women V Cancer Ride the Night Edinburgh 2019 and will cycle 100km through Scotland’s capital city at night with some of her really good friends, along with over a thousand other super inspiring women. Funds raised by this incredibly pink event all go towards Women V Cancer, helping to support thousands of people affected by women’s cancers through the invaluable work of Breast Cancer Care, Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust and Ovarian Cancer Action.
