Women V Cancer Charity Feature: Ovarian Cancer Action

Ovarian Cancer Action is on a mission to fund research that saves the lives of thousands of women. This incredible charity is dedicated to beating ovarian cancer once and for all. They, together with Breast Cancer Now and Jo's Cervical Cancer Trust, form Women V Cancer, which first started in 2010 and has since supported countless women across the UK through numerous women-only cycling challenges, including Ride the Night, Cycle Kenya, Cycle Milan to Venice and more. Here, Ovarian Cancer Action trust tells us a bit more about their amazing work and how they use the funds raised for them through the Women V Cancer challenges.

The stats

  • Every year, 7,800 women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer
  • Another woman will die of ovarian cancer every 2 hours
  • Symptoms awareness is poor, with less than 10% of women in the UK knowing all four symptoms
  • 20% of ovarian cancer cases are as a result of a faulty inherited gene, the BRCA 1 and BRCA 2 gene. Identifying who has this gene means we could prevent the cancer before it develops
  • A woman diagnosed with ovarian cancer has only a 46% chance of living longer than 5 years. And we think this is unacceptable.

We’re Ovarian Cancer Action. A charity dedicated to beating ovarian cancer. It’s the UK’s most deadly gynaecological disease. And it claims the life of another woman every two hours. At the moment, the diagnosis and treatment of ovarian cancers lags behind other high profile diseases like prostate or breast cancer. We think this is unacceptable.

That’s why we’re on a mission to fund research that saves lives. We do this by finding and funding the innovators who will help us break this cancer, from the scientists working on the latest breakthroughs in the lab to the people raising the vital funds we need to make our vision a reality. We’re here to champion the cause and bring people together to overcome a disease that strikes at the heart of what it means to be a woman.

We’re driven by a simple belief. We’re defined in life by our actions, not our words. It’s about mobilising thousands of people to get up and do something. Like you and the thousands of other women who will be cycling through the night to raise vital funds and awareness. Action sits at the heart of everything we do. Thank you for joining our fight. Together, let’s nail this disease once and for all.

Join us. Fight with us. Act Now.
