Prostate Cancer UK is an incredibly important charity with the simple yet essential mission to put an end to prostate cancer, which has recently overtaken breast cancer as the biggest cancer killer in the UK. It has never been more critical to work towards making the disease history and Prostate Cancer UK gets closer to achieving this every day.
Prostate Cancer UK have also joined forces with our charity partner CoppaFeel! to get both men and women standing up to cancer together on our Walk the Night challenge in London.
Here, Prostate Cancer UK tells us more about their important work as a reminder of what we do our challenges for.
About Prostate Cancer UK
Prostate Cancer UK is leading the fight against prostate cancer. We fund groundbreaking research, drive improvements in treatment, and fight injustice in care. Now we’ve set ourselves the toughest challenge yet: to stop prostate cancer being a killer.
We’re investing heavily in research, focusing on three areas:
Planning a future from prostate cancer doesn’t mean that we’re going to leave men already living with and after this disease standing alone. We’ll continue to provide award-winning support to men with prostate cancer through our Specialist Nurses, peer support, and information.
Who gets prostate cancer?
In the UK, about 1 in 8 men will get prostate cancer at some point in their lives. Older men, men with a family history of prostate cancer and black men are more at risk. If you are worried about your risk, or are experiencing any symptoms, go and see your GP. They can talk to you about your risk, and about the tests that are used to diagnose prostate cancer.
Prostate cancer mainly affects men over 50, and your risk increases as you get older. The average age for men to be diagnosed with prostate cancer is between 65 and 69 years
If people in your family have prostate cancer or breast cancer, it might increase your risk of getting prostate cancer. This is because you may have the same faulty genes.
Black men are more likely to get prostate cancer than other men. We don’t know why, but it might be linked to genes. In the UK, about 1 in 4 black men will get prostate cancer at some point in their lives.

Your walk will change lives
Every penny you raise will help get us closer to our goal of stopping prostate cancer being a killer.
£10 could pay for could pay for 60 petri dishes.
Petri dishes are used to grow cells, they come in different sizes, but on average, they can hold around 6 million prostate cancer cells each, which is enough for one experiment.
£25 could pay for one of our Specialist Nurses for one hour. Our nurses help men, and their families affected by prostate cancer by providing essential medical, practical and emotional support.
£50 could pay for the analysis of four tissue samples in a man’s first biopsy to work out the individual make-up of his prostate cancer to help clinicians decide which treatment is most likely to work for him.
£100 could cover the cost of analysing six blood samples to help researchers find new ways to identify aggressive prostate cancer earlier.
£500 could cover the cost of a researcher publishing their data to share their findings with the scientific community, so other researchers can learn from and build on these results to make progress more quickly.
