The Iceland Lava Trek 2022

Feel the burn on this five-day volcanic adventure in Iceland’s Southern Highlands. From lava crossings to glistening glaciers to small streams to raging rivers, trekking doesn’t get more dramatic than this.

Starting in Landmannalaugar, we’ll climb through the mountains on all sorts of terrains, tackling rocky stretches, snow fields and expanses of glistening black obsidian rock.

We’ll pass natural hot springs, deep gorges and literal ice lands, cooling off as we wade through glacial streams!

Our steep descent may be greener, but no less striking, with rolling hills, roped footbridges and a powerful finish in the valley of Thor, the Norse God of thunder.

Camping amidst the mountains by night, we’ll get the special chances to swim in a secluded fresh-water lake, see stars unspoiled by light pollution and end with a visit to the Blue Lagoon geothermal spa.

Worried about fundraising? Don't be...

The Iceland Lava Trek 2022 is an Open Challenge, which means you choose how you fund your adventure.

Your itinerary

Day 1
UK – Landmannalaugar, Iceland

We first meet at the airport in London, where we catch our flight to Keflavik. Touching down in Iceland, our local challenge guides greet us at the airport and we head to the stunning Southern Highlands.

This approx. three-hour transfer gives us a fantastic introduction to the country, with views of Hekla, Iceland‘s most famous volcano, glistening with glaciers, geysers, hot springs and waterfalls.

Arriving in Landmannalaugar, we enjoy a delicious welcome dinner and spend our first night camping in the mountains.

Day 2
Day 2 | Landmannalaugar – Álftavatn | approx. 24km

Waking to breakfast with a mountain backdrop, we leave our camp to venture through volcanic terrains. Our route takes us up through rhyolite rocks, before crossing lava!

From fire to ice, we encounter snow fields and as we approach our highest point, we pass Stórihver, a large hot spring.

Our terrain changes again and treats us to incredible panoramas across Hrafntinnusker, as we trek through fields of glistening black obsidian rock.

Now, we commence our exciting descent over scree and across a river to our camp at Álftavatn, an awesome volcanic lake. We end our day with dinner at camp and if you’re up for it, you can take the fab opportunity to swim in the lake.

Day 3
Day 3 | Álftavatn – Emstrur | approx. 14km

Today, we discover some of Iceland’s literal ice lands and enter a glacial area! Venturing past deep ice gorges, we cool off our aching legs wading through glacial streams!

Leaving the winter wonderland behind, we descend to Hvanngil, a greener part of the area, home to local mountain shepherds.

Then, it’s one last stretch across desert-like passes and hills, to our camp at Emstrur, nestled amidst rolling mountain scenery.

Day 4
Emstrur – Thorsmörk – Reykjavik | approx. 15km

Rise and shine to our last day trekking! We start with an exciting river crossing and use ropes on the footbridge to climb down.

Grounded, we continue our descent out of the valley and across a shallow river, to follow a long, steep path to Thorsmörk, the valley of Thor.

Named after the Norse God of thunder, this vast valley gives us amazing views as we hike, from giant glaciers to raging rivers, right up until we reach our finish point!

From here, we transfer through dramatic landscape to our comfortable hotel cabin in Reykjavik.

Feeling as triumphant as Thor himself, we celebrate tonight with a dinner and party Iceland-style!

Day 5
Reykjavik – UK

We end our Iceland adventure in the best way this morning with a visit to the famous Blue Lagoon.

Nestled in an amazing field of lava, this spectacular natural spa boasts geothermal seawater and minerals a-plenty, making it the perfect place to soothe our muscles and admire the rolling, green hills.

Lunch is not included today, but you can take the opportunity to taste Iceland’s well renowned seafood at one of the Blue Lagoon’s restaurants.

If this doesn’t sound like your thing, you are of course, welcome to miss the visit and spend your morning exploring the city instead.

This afternoon, we head to the airport and fly back to London, where we part ways for home.

Want more time in Iceland?
We're delighted to offer all participants an amazing optional two-night extension package in Iceland.

Our excursion gives you the once-in-a-lifetime chances to explore the Golden Circle, immerse yourself in Iceland's fascinating history and watch whales in the wild.

*Please note, our Dream Challenges staff and doctors will return to the UK with the group on Day 5, so we won’t be on hand throughout the extension. However, you will be well looked after by our trusted partner in Iceland.

If you choose to take part in the optional extension package (not included in challenge costs), you won't fly back with the main group on Day 5, but will stay another two nights in Reykjavik.

After saying goodbye to the rest of the group at the airport, you’ll transfer back to the hotel in Reykjavik. The rest of the day is free for you to spend as you wish, exploring the city.

It’s a fantastic chance to pick up some souvenirs and immerse yourself a little more in Iceland’s culture, as you wander the streets. Lunch and dinner are not included today, so please take advantage of this opportunity to try out one of the capital's many delicious restaurants.

Day 6
Optional Extension | Golden Circle

After an early breakfast at the hotel in Reykjavik, you’ll be picked up for a day exploring the stunning sites of the Golden Circle.

Starting off on a high, you’ll first visit the Nesjavellir power plant. Located near the beautiful Lake Þingvallavatn, this high-temperature geothermal area supplies approximately 25% of Reykjavik’s hot water for central heating.

A short transfer later, you’ll enter the historical Þingvellir National Park. As the birth place of the Icelandic parliament Alþingi, Þingvellir is rich in history and holds a special place in the hearts of Icelanders. Alþingi dates back to 930AD, making it the oldest known functioning parliament in the world!

This active volcanic area’s history doesn’t end there. It’s also where Icelanders first adopted Christianity in the year 1000 and has been a national park since the 1920’s, finally earning a place on UNESCO’s World Heritage List in August 2004.

History aside, Þingvellir is a geographic gem, owing its unique landscape to the tectonic plates of America and Europe, that meet in the national park and are slowly drifting apart.

You’ll hop back on the bus and drive to the majestic and beautiful waterfall of Gullfoss, before continuing to the geothermal area around the spouting hot springs of Geysir and Strokkur.

After some time soaking in the gorgeous scenery, your tour will take you to Skálholt church, the ancient seat of the Icelandic bishops in the south, where the first translation of the Old Testament was printed.

Following the Golden Circle back towards the hotel, you’ll make a photo stop by the immensely powerful implosion crater, Kerið.

You’ll travel through fertile agricultural areas to Hveragerði, a charming horticultural town, which takes advantage of the geothermal energy to cultivate a bright variety of plantlife. Wandering around the town’s greenhouses, you’ll see and smell the freshly growing vegetables, exotic fruits and colourful flowers.

One last scenic transfer through the mountains will take you back to the hotel in Reykjavik. Again, please make your own lunch and dinner arrangements today.

Day 7
Optional Extension | Whale Watching

Get ready for a whale of a time! After breakfast, you’ll be picked up in front of the hotel at approx. 08.30hrs and transferred to the harbour, where your boat awaits. All aboard, you’ll explore the waters of Flaxafloi Bay on a three-hour whale-watching excursion.

Keep your eyes peeled for all sorts of species, including Minke and Humpback whales, along with Harbour Porpoises and White-Beaked Dolphins. If you’re lucky, you may even spot Orcas and Blue Whales!

Finishing the safari at midday, you’ll be transferred back to the hotel in Reykjavik to freshen up for your journey home. Then it’s time to say goodbye to Iceland, with a transfer to the airport for your flight back to London (included).
