With a hop, brick, and a jump, we can take on China's Great Wall together in our Let's Trek For Children challenge. This nine-day challenge entails five full days of trekking along ancient and remote sections of the Great Wall of China. The terrain is challenging, but the panoramic views are stunning. At the end of the challenge, there is the opportunity to explore Beijing and its Forbidden City.
This Great Wall of China trek is open to people of all ages and from all walks of life, who will come together to do something amazing. Trek the Great Wall of China and raise funds for the children’s charity of your choice and it will be life-changing in so many ways. Whether you choose to fundraise for a large national children’s charity or a local children’s charity, your efforts will have a huge impact on the lives of sick and disadvantaged children across the country. We have a selection of children’s charities to choose from on our website, but if the children’s charity you want to fundraise for isn’t listed, please don’t worry as we will contact them for you and set everything up.
Make a real difference by signing up to the next Let’s Trek for Children challenge.
We board overnight flights from London to Beijing and arrive in Beijing on Day 2. Once we land, we transfer by coach from Beijing to Huangyaguan, where we overnight at the Huangyaguan Hotel. There's an opportunity to walk on a short section of the Great Wall this afternoon for two to three hours as a warm up. This section of the wall at Taipingzhai was built in 557 AD. We start from the Banlagang Mountain and head west, before arriving in the Widow Tower. This part of the wall is built over a mountain ridge at 2,300 m. Along this part of the wall, you’ll find watchtowers, a barbican and battlement.
Today, we trek up Huangyaguan Great Wall, climbing for the first hour and a half on a section of the wall that was renovated in the 1980’s, to reach the top of the mountain where we are rewarded with spectacular views. We then follow the ruins of the wall walking on mountain paths and occasionally walking on the wall. Eventually, we trek down into the valley and to Qiangjian Village, where we overnight in farmer’s guest houses.
We walk from the village uphill onto the Great Wall again and make our way along ruined sections of the wall. We descend from this mountainous section to Longman Village and follow the village road to Shuicheng Village and to the main road, where we meet the bus and transfer to Jinshanling Great Wall and overnight at Jinshan Hotel.
This morning, we have a bus transfer to take us to our starting point near Gubeikou. We walk through a village before climbing up the Great Wall. This section of the wall is more impressive, as it is wider and more strongly fortified. After lunch, we make our way through villages and fields. We climb back onto the wall later in the day, before reaching Jinshanling, where we find our overnight accommodation at Jinshan Hotel
Todays’ walk offers what is reputedly the best section of wall walking. There will be many fantastic photo opportunities as we pass more magnificent watch towers. We eventually leave the wall to walk down to the road, where we're met by our transport that takes us to Huairou. There, we overnight in a hotel.
After breakfast, we have a short bus transfer to Jiankou. Our final day of walking starts along narrow paths through fields, which are dotted with villages. We start to climb up to the wall on a continuous incline that eventually brings us to the highest watch tower on this section. The view is spectacular. We continue along some un-renovated parts of the wall, until we reach a restored section near Mutianyu. We are met here by our transport to our hotel in Beijing, where we can enjoy our celebration dinner.
Today is a free day in Beijing. You can explore the city at leisure or join our optional tour of some of the many famous sights in Beijing.
We transfer to Beijing airport for our daytime flights to the UK.
