Let's Trek for Children - Great Wall of China

With a hop, brick, and a jump, we can take on China's Great Wall together in our Let's Trek For Children challenge. This nine-day challenge entails five full days of trekking along ancient and remote sections of the Great Wall of China. The terrain is challenging, but the panoramic views are stunning. At the end of the challenge, there is the opportunity to explore Beijing and its Forbidden City.

This Great Wall of China trek is open to people of all ages and from all walks of life, who will come together to do something amazing. Trek the Great Wall of China and raise funds for the children’s charity of your choice and it will be life-changing in so many ways. Whether you choose to fundraise for a large national children’s charity or a local children’s charity, your efforts will have a huge impact on the lives of sick and disadvantaged children across the country. We have a selection of children’s charities to choose from on our website, but if the children’s charity you want to fundraise for isn’t listed, please don’t worry as we will contact them for you and set everything up.

Make a real difference by signing up to the next Let’s Trek for Children challenge.

Your itinerary

Days 1 & 2
London - Beijing - Huangyaguan | approx. 2-3 hours walking

We board overnight flights from London to Beijing and arrive in Beijing on Day 2. Once we land, we transfer by coach from Beijing to Huangyaguan, where we overnight at the Huangyaguan Hotel. This afternoon, we have the opportunity to stretch our legs after our journey with a two to three hour warm-up walk on a short section of the Great Wall - a small taster of what lies in our challenge ahead. Steeped in history, this section of the wall at Taipingzhai was built in 557 AD and offers fantastic views of its lush, green surroundings. We start from the Banlagang Mountain and head west, before arriving in the Widow Tower, built over a mountain ridge at 2,300 m. Along this part of the wall, you’ll find watchtowers, a barbican and battlement - a perfect intro to the challenge and China itself.

Day 3
Huangyaguan - Qiangjian | approx. 6 hours walking

Today, we trek up Huangyaguan Great Wall, climbing for the first hour and a half on a section of the wall that was renovated in the 1980’s, to reach the top of the mountain, where we're rewarded with spectacular views. We then follow the ruins of the wall, walking on mountain paths and occasionally walking on the wall. Eventually, we trek down into the valley and to Qiangjian Village, where we stay the night in farmer’s guest houses.

Day 4
Qiangjian - Shuicheng | approx. 5-6 hours walking

We walk from the village uphill onto the Great Wall again and make our way along ruined sections of the wall. We descend from this mountainous section to Longman Village and follow the charming village road to Shuicheng Village and eventually, to the main road. Here, we catch our bus transfer to Jinshanling Great Wall and rest tonight at Jinshan Hotel.

Day 5
Gubeikou - Jinshanling | approx. 6 hours walking

Our morning starts with a bus transfer to our starting point near Gubeikou. We walk through a pretty village, before climbing up the Great Wall. This section of the wall is more impressive, as it's wider and more strongly fortified. After lunch, we make our way through villages and fields. We climb back onto the wall later in the day, before reaching Jinshanling (this time on foot), where we find Jinshan Hotel and stay there for another night.

Day 6
Jinshanling - Simatai | approx. 4 hours walking

Todays’ stretch offers what is reputedly the best section of wall walking. We're treated to many fantastic photo opportunities as we pass more magnificent watch towers. We eventually leave the wall to walk down to the road, where we're met by our transport that takes us to our hotel in Huairou.

Day 7
Jiankou - Mutianyu | approx. 6 hours walking

After breakfast, we have a short bus transfer to Jiankou. Our final day of walking starts along narrow paths through fields, which are dotted with villages. We start to climb up to the wall on a continuous incline that eventually brings us to the highest watch tower of this section. The view is stupendous! We continue along some non-renovated parts of the wall, until we reach a restored section near Mutianyu. We are met here by our transport to our hotel in Beijing, where we can enjoy our celebration dinner.

Day 8
Explore Beijing

Today is a free day in Beijing. You can explore the city at leisure or join our optional tour of some of the many famous sights in Beijing.

Day 9
Beijing to London

We transfer to Beijing airport for our daytime flights to the UK.

Let's Trek for Children - Great Wall of China

This challenge is not designed for Olympic athletes – it is designed for people looking for an amazing goal to train and get fit for. A number of the people who will take part on this challenge will have little or no fitness level when they sign up. This challenge is the perfect motivation to get fit, lose weight and have an experience of a lifetime.

Please don't be! The majority of people will sign up on their own. Once the event is fully booked, we will send you a contact list of everyone registered for the challenge, as often there will be someone in your local area you can meet up to train or fundraise with.

Absolutely not! One of the amazing things about the challenge is that people of all ages will come together to do something very special. The age range is likely to be from 18 to 75.

You will of course need a pair of walking boots. We will supply you with a comprehensive list of everything you will need to take on the event well before your departure date.

We will stay in tourist class hotels and in shared rooms for the duration of the challenge, except for one night, where we rest in authentic farmers' guest houses.

Yes of course! If you wish to extend your stay, you will need to come out of our group flights (and of course, we would deduct the cost from your balance).

In addition to paying your registration fee, you will need to budget for your airport taxes and the fuel surcharge, personal travel insurance, gratuities, optional tours and personal expenses.

You will need to take out your own personal travel insurance, covering health, accident, loss and repatriation. Dream Challenges has a recommended policy that provides appropriate cover for this type of activity. We will send you the details once you have registered. You can however take out your own insurance, providing it covers you for a charity trek in China. You will be required to obtain a tourist visa for entry into China, we will send you all the relevant information and forms to do this before the challenge.

The Dream Challenges team are here to help you achieve your challenge and will support you all the way. We are on hand from the minute you sign up to answer any questions that you may have about your training or the challenge itself. Once you have registered we will send you a realistic training programme to help you get fit for the event. The programme builds up gradually as the event gets closer.
