Challenge level: 2 out of 5

'Seas' the day and race the sun with our hugely popular team adventure challenge set across the stunning Isle of Wight. The challenge is on for teams of four to cycle 44 miles, trek the Tennyson Trail and canoe a 1.5 km course on the River Medina. Teams set off at sunrise and power to the coast for some spectacular ocean views of the world famous sand cliffs, the Needles. Next teams tackle the Tennyson Trail - however, this sure is no walk on the beach as teams race on to the River Medina to complete the challenge before the sun sets.
You, three teammates, three activities, three tests of endurance… what better way to settle who’s on office tea duty - all while supporting an amazing cause! So turn those kitchen tea chats into team chats and sign up today.
All funds raised by the challenge will support the work of children's charity Action Medical Research, offering hope to the many thousands of families across the UK who are dealing with the trauma of a baby born too early, striving to support a child affected by disability, or facing the challenge of caring for a child with a rare and devastating disease for which there is no cure.
Our event begins with registration on Friday afternoon from 6 pm, followed by a compulsory briefing at 8 pm, where the challenge is explained in full, and you have the chance to ask questions and meet other teams.
We set off from Newport, in the centre of the island, for the first leg of cycling (approx. 25 miles). All of the cycling on this challenge is on road, so any bike is suitable - we would recommend a racing bike or a hybrid rather than a mountain bike. The way-marked and marshalled route takes you to our check-in point at the New Battery, which overlooks the Needles. Here, you leave your bikes with our support team and head off on foot along the Tennyson Trail, where you undertake a circular walk of approx. 12 miles, with spectacular coastal views down the island. Then it is back to the check-in point to retrieve bikes and set off for the cycle to the River Medina, which is approx. 19 miles. The final part of the challenge is a 1.5 km canoe course on the Medina. You will be using two Canadian canoes rafted together and buoyancy aids are provided. Please note canoe experience is not necessary. Your Race The Sun Isle of Wight challenge finishes as your team canoes across the finish line!
The more money raised by participants on the challenge the higher the percentage of funds that directly support the work of Action Medical Research.

Race the Sun Isle of Wight is an exciting action event. It is achievable by people with a reasonable level of fitness, who are prepared to put in plenty of training beforehand. The more you train, the more you will enjoy the challenge. It is a great incentive to train and get fit for, whilst at the same time knowing you are raising funds for an excellent cause.
This challenge is all on road so a road bike is suitable.
Your equipment for trekking the Tennyson Trail will be transported to the New Battery so it is waiting for you when you finish the first cycle leg. It is then transported back to the finish line once the final team has left the New Battery. We recommend you remove all sweaty clothing and replace it with dry clothing before each section.
You need to provide your own bikes and we would suggest a road or hybrid bike for this challenge as the route is all on-road. Your bike must be well maintained and in good working order and a thorough service before the big day is recommended. You should carry a puncture repair kit and pump and you are advised to carry a spare inner tube as well. There will be a bike mechanic on hand to deal with any serious repairs.
Canoe experience is not necessary for this challenge. Your team of four will use two Canadian style canoes, which are tied together to form a raft. The canoes, paddles and buoyancy aids are provided.
It is essential that you come prepared with the correct equipment for the challenge. A cycling helmet is essential and we insist that you have walking boots or fell running shoes for the hiking element of the challenge. You must also have a map, compass and appropriate waterproof clothing.
Don't worry if you haven't confirmed your team of four people yet, you can register now to secure your place and then send us details of your other team members as soon as they are confirmed.
